A Look at Ethics in Business Management: Tips for Baby Boomers and Seniors

One might ask why ethics are so important in business management, particularly as they relate to baby boomers and seniors returning to work.

In order to respond to the inquiry, one must first determine what ethics are, as they apply to business.

Dictionary.com defines business ethics as “the study and examination of moral and social responsibility in relation to business practices and decision-making in business.”

There are many different aspects to ethics, as they relate to business management. Most important, is the moral aspect. Ideally, moral mandates form the basis for all business ethics, principles and practices.

Success often appears to be the ultimate goal when it comes to business ethics, but it is not always the only goal. Every business wants to have the respect in the community where it is established. Financial success is another goal. The respect of its employees is also important.

Ideally, management establishes a moral code for their business. They set an operational mandate with further guidelines re ethical principles and practices in a legitimate business based upon their moral code or standards. This helps to determine the success of their business.

One of the primary tasks of business management is to ascertain that a business operates with integrity and honesty. If not, why not?

Ultimately, the success of any business can be compromised in an adverse manner if does not operate in that way. It is only common sense. Who wants to do business with a company or organization that does not run its operation based upon moral and ethical principles in respect to management, as well as business practices? Would that kind of a business survive in any community? Would employees want to work there?

Aware of this reality, business management establishes an appropriate, moral code or set of moral standards and then, builds ethical guidelines in accordance in order to guarantee the success of their business. At times, this involves hours of study or extensive research into current or previously established, moral and ethical guidelines for businesses of a similar nature. These may differ from moral and ethical guidelines of other eras.

Why is this so important?

Taking this beyond the moral and ethical concerns of business, there are legal issues that can affect any business. No ethical, business management personnel want to become engaged in legal disputes, as the result of amoral or non-ethical business principles or practices.

Social responsibility is an important part of the larger reality relegated to business management. A business, company or organization has to answer to its superiors, as well as others in the community for its moral, ethical and legal practices.

The decision making process in any business is ongoing and the decisions made by business management are not necessarily easy to make. Decisions invariably affect not only their own business, but those of others, as well. With this in mind, it is apparent that ethics is always an important aspect of business management.
