Keeping fit on a vacation is important, especially if you are a baby boomer or senior, or someone who is fitness conscious. Unfortunately, vacation time may lead to over-indulgence or travel without regular exercise.

Plan ahead

Where you go can be a major factor in keeping fit while on a vacation. Your mental fitness is just as important as your physical fitness, so plan your vacation accordingly. Keeping a healthy balance of rest and relaxation is important, but there are other factors to consider. Consider contacting a fitness trainer where you will be vacationing and ask about workouts and advice about keeping fit during your stay.      

Avoid over-indulgence

Plan your vacation so that it does not result in over-indulgence with respect to food you eat, or alcoholic beverages you consume. Whenever possible, stick to your normal diet and routine, regardless of where you are and what you are going to be doing on your vacation. Make realistic choices when it comes to what you eat and drink. Remember that it is easier to put on extra pounds when you are on vacation, than to take them off again.

Choose to eat only healthy food

Even if you are away from home, you can make an active decision to eat only healthy food. Avoiding food that is not healthy for you is a wise decision wherever you are, as you will feel better while you are on your vacation. Your energy level while you are away and when you return home, will reveal the truth. You may be able to avoid dietary problems like diabetes, by being careful with your diet.  

Control portion sizes

Portion size is important when you are on a vacation, as you may be tempted to consume everything that appears appetizing. When the portion size served to you are excessive, you can regulate your portion size in accordance with your existing dietary weight loss or weight management program. If your portion size seems excessive, it does not necessarily mean that you have to eat all of it. You can decide to eat what is normal for you to eat or ask for a doggie bag. Your earlier healthy food choice will be better for you than snacks at midnight. Asking your host to reduce your portion size because you are fitness conscious, or need assistance with dietary management is a good idea. Your host may begin to see the merit of your approach to your dietary management and follow your example.         

Get regular exercise

When on vacation, getting regular exercise is important. Make time for exercise or time to work on your normal exercise routine, while you rest and relax on your vacation. Inquiring ahead of time about exercise facilities will allow you to continue your normal exercise routine. There are many different kinds of exercise, so if you cannot do one, try something new and different. If there are no exercise facilities available, you may rent a bicycle, go hiking or jogging. Swimming is excellent exercise for everyone, as is kayaking or canoeing.
