How to Overcome Negativity in the Work Place: Tips For Baby Boomers and Seniors

Is negativity the dominant attitude where you work? Is it ever possible to overcome this kind of negativity?

Even as a baby boomer or senior returning to work, there is only one way to combat negativity in the work place and that is by being proactive and powerfully, positively motivated regardless of the overly critical and extremely adverse spirit that puts out the workplace fire of enthusiasm.

Alliance Training and Consulting, Inc. advises those confronted with this kind of a negative environment to “develop your personal action plan to implement changes for a more positive work environment.”

Negativity in the workplace is the result of an unhealthy, destructive or antagonistic attitude towards management, others in the workplace, the job or the workplace itself. It demonstrates a negative perception of individuals in the workplace and carries a degree of contagion that can spread like wildfire.
This may be evident in management or even upper management, as well.

Overcoming negativity in a workplace is never easy particularly if you, as an employer or an employee, are out-numbered. By being and staying positive, you will find that others are attracted to your attitude and work ethics.

What are some of the things that you can do to overcome negativity in the workplace?

Smile a lot.

“Why are you smiling?”

“What do you know that we don’t know?”

“What’s wrong with that employee?”

There is an element of mystery in a simple smile. It can raise the curiosity of the most negative person in a work environment.  Most employees want that kind of happiness in their lives, homes and workplace, but many are not able to find it.

Speak only positive words.

While those around you continue to speak negative words refuse to participate in adverse, destructive or manipulative conversations that intentionally demean others, the job or your workplace. Address everyone in a business-like, professional manner and others may begin to change their manner of speaking too.

Set a good example as a professional employer or employee.

Professional employees succeed in terms of promotions, bonuses, advancements and salary increases whereas those who complain or fight seldom get ahead in a workplace.

Wear professional attire.

Dress professionally, thereby developing a professional level of personal comportment. In doing so, you are setting an example and others will follow in your footsteps.

Be an active listener.

As an active listener, you may be able to intervene as a mediator or in the capacity of a counselor and help to solve workplace problems.

Create positive opportunities for others.

Negativity in the workplace may be the direct result of employees feeling locked into positions where advancement is not possible. As you begin to create opportunities for others, your employer will see changes taking place in them too.

Take time to talk to other employees.

Taking the time to talk to other employees will give you insight into what is actually happening in the workplace.

Be aware that it is possible to overcome negativity in a workplace, even though it may take extra effort on your part, as well as that of others. Do not succumb to the negativity of a workplace, even if it takes time to resolve issues and concerns. This can be accomplished through random acts of kindness, caring and compassion for others, by those like you, who truly care.
