Is age the determining factor
in starting a new business? Are you a baby boomer or senior contemplating
starting a new business, but wondering if it is too late because of your age?
The Businesslink.gov.uk web site offers some excellent
suggestions for anyone interested in starting
up a new business. Note that these guidelines do not list age
specifications.
Like many others, you may be a
baby boomer without current employment, a new retiree wanting to do something
different or a previous business owner, who has recently closed down a
business. As a male or female, you may have been left alone as a widow or
widower.
On the infinite tangent of
forever, never is a wonderful word. It opens amazing horizons of possibility
that extend beyond the realm of age. Age wise, what is the cut off date for
starting a new business? There is no cut off date with respect to age.
Starting any new business after
a certain age may seem ludicrous to some, but at the same time, businesses are
not restricted to a certain age group or to those under a certain age, although
in some instances, it may those under age eighteen or the elderly seniors. Age is not normally an issue when a
person is healthy and business-oriented.
Is there sufficient motivation?
Is the potential new business owner positive, constructive and pro-active in
terms of a prospective, entrepreneurial, business venture?
This is the age of new Internet
businesses, as there is an increasing demand for them. Finding one’s own
business niche is the key to starting a successful new business. Perhaps upgrading
or training in new skills is appropriate.
Many baby boomers are currently
in a state of employment transition because of vast technological, as well as
other changes in their places of employment. Numerous new retirees are well
suited as potential new business owners because they have been harboring
business ideas for years, with the intent of possibly starting a business when
they have more time or post-retirement. Many men and women have waited years
for an opportunity to do something they have always wanted to do.
Should age stop them? No.
Previous business owners often
find their businesses are becoming or are currently outmoded and they do not
want to continue with them. Nor do they want to retire yet, so starting a new
business may seem to be more appropriate, regardless of their age or previous
level of success. Perhaps there are those who have saved money for years, in
order to have start up capital for a new business. Investing in a home based
business may be ideal solution for them. Those men and women whose children
have grown up and left home may want to start new businesses as baby boomers or
retirees, in order to fill the void left by empty nest syndrome.
Starting a new business is
becoming increasingly easy for anyone whose ambitions are oriented in that
direction. Age does not even have to enter the picture in many instances,
particularly when the ambitious, potential new business owner is mentally,
physically and emotionally competent to start a new business. Any business is
potentially transferable to a younger generation, later.
Note that there will always be
exciting and different challenges for any potential, new business owner. While
age may appear to be one of them, it may not necessarily be the sole
determining factor in terms of possible success. It is never too late to start
a new business.
